In the '2023 Big Data Platform-based Analysis Service Support Project' conducted by the National Information Society Agency (NIA) and the Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT), the analysis results of the (사)East Asia Ocean Community (hereinafter referred to as Ocean) were selected as an outstanding case.
The 'Big Data Platform-based Analysis Service Support Project' aims to match and support analysis companies for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) lacking analytical expertise and financial resources to solve company issues based on data.
In 2023, NIA selected a total of 50 projects from SMEs that applied. Among them, Ocean, a marine litter research institution, participated as an analysis company in the project 'Development of an AI-based Automatic Detection System for Marine Debris' proposed by DevGuru Co., Ltd. Ocean extracted metadata that can be quantified from image data collected by DevGuru over the past three years while operating the Sea Knights program, and analyzed the amount and extent of marine debris in the images. In addition to images, Ocean reviewed various methods, from basic statistical analysis to spatial information analysis, by processing and integrating other marine litter data. At the same time, Ocean provided consulting on the collection method and standardization of data for producing image data for artificial intelligence learning.
Based on this series of final outcomes, DevGuru plans to implement an AI-based automatic detection system for marine debris on mobile phones. This is expected to not only expand the activities and participation of Sea Knights but also increase public awareness and action for marine environmental protection among the general public. Furthermore, as an excellent case of ESG management for reducing marine litter, it is expected to induce the spread of talent donation from companies with relevant technologies and strong participation intentions.
Ocean found it significant to directly participate in the process of transforming citizen-contributed data accumulated over several years into information. Ocean will continue to strive to produce meaningful information for reducing marine litter in the future.
